After moving back from Texas, we've worked to rebuild our LGD pack. We currently have Tank, Daisy, Hoss, Gator, GloryBelle and Lainey. As Tank retires out, we will add another female to the pack. We have a variety of guardians with some that are great pyrenees, others are anatolians and then some are a cross of the two. We have full intentions of fencing off our entire property to 1) keep strays and coyotes out (as much as possible) 2) they can patrol the perimeter of the property and 3) have plenty of space to run and play.
Daisy will be two years old this year and we plan to breed her during her next cycle. Daisy is Tank's daughter from her last litter. We had not intended to keep her but when the buyer backed out, I knew that was the best decision because she belonged here with us. Early on we knew she was an amazing guardian for our animals and children.
Our sweet girl Tank is 7 this year. The life expectancy for GPs is 10-12 years and we just pray that Tank will live much longer than expected. She has been a wonderful addition to our family and farm. We've had her since she was 10 weeks old and she's always been so good with the kids and any animals we've ever owned. She's only had three litters in her lifetime and her last litter, 2 years ago, we decided to keep one of her daughters, Daisy. Tank and Daisy are always together and the only two of our pyrs that have free roam of the entire farm. They patrol at night and always stay close to home during the day.
Glory Belle is an awesome LGD. She is the alpha amongst the females here. I love her personality of all business and takes her job seriously. Her duties as of now are in the breeding pen with our buck Renegade and our older nannies Chloe, Daytona, Oreo and Cookie.
Gator was a love at first sight deal. We went to help a friend with trimming hooves on her goats. While we were there, of course she had to show us her recent litter and BAM, he had to come home with us. Gator is under Hoss's belt to learn the ropes around here and he's doing great so far. We have set our eyes on his future mate and she will be ready in a few more weeks to join us here.
A dear friend of ours had a litter of GPs and one look at Hoss and we knew he would be a perfect addition at Frugal Fig. At 8 weeks old, he went into the chicken coop and was the perfect guardian. Due to a career change, we had to re-home all of our chickens so now he is only housed with our goats and is near our pigs. He is about 18 months old and we know that pairing him with Daisy will be an excellent match for a litter full of future livestock guardians.
Lainey is all legs right now but I can see that she's starting to fill out. Lainey came from a farm up in north Mississippi and she's an anatolian/great pyrenees mix with a dash of cat in there LOL. Be sure to check out my blog to see the photo of her on top of my suburban. I still haven't figured out how she can get up there.
