The idea of getting pigs is all on Chris and Landon. I do not know anything about pigs and have never owned a pig before. We have definitely had a crash course learning all we can about what's best to feed them and how much, how to handle them, fencing requirements, etc.
Overall though, I have enjoyed raising pigs. We have a few that we plan to breed over the next year and we are all excited to welcome piglets to the farm.
Nosetta earned her name for being very curious about everyone and everything. She is also the boss lady of the pig yard. She is a Hereford/Duroc cross but obviously looks more like a Hereford. She is the biggest of all of our pigs. Nosetta was actually purchased by Landon and he has put a lot time and work into her as she was wild when we got her at 10 weeks old. She is now almost 7 months old and we have a registered Hereford boar in with her in hopes of him breeding her during her next cycle. Raising hogs is making a turn around in my opinion because we're working towards better quality meat pigs for our family.
Matilda is a pretty girl and she is a Duroc cross hog. She's pretty skittish but Landon continues working with her and hopefully she'll come around soon. She really likes treat time.
Batgirl was named by Waylon. She is also a Duroc cross hog and Nosetta's sidekick. Batgirl likes ear scratches and LOVES treats. We hope to have an excellent litter of piglets from her too.
Beast is a four month old registered Hereford meat line boar from south MS. We've had him for about a month and he's in the pig yard with our four older gilts. Excited to see his genetics passed down through our unregistered gilts for a better quality meat pigs.
Hulk is an awesome little man. He's almost 3 months old now and is an easy keeper and loves to eat treats out of your hand. He escaped his pen the other day and we shook a bag of animal crackers and he came running. Landon reached down, picked him up and put him back into his pen. This is the type of behavior I would love to have with all of our pigs but like I said before, we're learning from our mistakes.
We decided to get Bacon to raise him and get him ready for freezer camp. He's three months old and still has a lot of growing to do before he's ready for that. Hog raising isn't for the faint of heart.
